February is Black History month, and the University of Idaho has events and activities to celebrate and build community on campus. Black History month began being acknowledged in 1926 and is meant to be a time to celebrate and honor the contributions and achievements of African Americans in the U.S. The UI’s Black/African American Cultural Center (BAACC) has a full schedule of activities to bolster community and celebrate this month at UI. Check out this calendar of events that UI students can attend and participate in to celebrate Black History Month this year.

Barbershop Talk

In a unique event tailored for black UI students, on Monday Feb. 5, students can attend the Barbershop Talk starting at 6 p.m. in the ISUB room 301. This empowering event is a space for insightful conversations, haircuts, food and drinks and community building.

Elevated Black Voices Panel

On Wednesday Feb. 7, students are invited to attend the Elevated Black Voices Panel from 6-8 p.m. in the Pitman Center Vandal Ballroom. The event will be a platform for both students and staff to share their experiences, make connections and foster important conversations. The panelists will explore topics ranging from community to education and empowerment. Attendees are encouraged to bring their questions and be prepared to join the conversation.

Hip Hop Throw BAAC

For a blast from the past, students can attend the 90’s Hip Hop Throw BAACC event on Friday Feb. 9 starting at 6 p.m. in the ASUI Vandal Lounge. For a night of throwback hip hop fun, attendees are encouraged to dress in 90’s style and bring friends to dance the night away. The event includes free food, great music and a special cultural presentation about the history of hip hop and its influence on culture.

For more information about events or the BAAC, check out the BAAC calendar of events. UI students and faculty are encouraged to engage with the BAAC this month and throughout the year by participating in events and discussions, supporting the center or connecting on social media. The BAAC can be followed on Instagram and Facebook @uidaho.baacc.
