With all the stress and chaos of moving into a new living space, it can be easy to overlook some dorm must-haves that don’t show up on most packing lists. Beyond the basic necessities like clothes and school supplies, there are some additional items that students should consider adding to their living spaces to make their college experience easier and more enjoyable. Check out this list of 10 additions that you might not have considered yet.

1. Fan

Since most of the dorms at the University of Idaho do not have air conditioning, some sort of way to cool off your space is a must-have. Whether you invest in a box fan for your window or just bring a small personal fan, students will not regret having a fan to help with the heat in the first few months of the semester.

2. Mirror

While the dorms usually include a vanity mirror, a full-length mirror in your room can make all the difference when planning outfits and getting ready for the day. A mirror that fits on the back of your door or on the closet door won’t take up any space and will make your room feel bigger and your daily life a little easier.

3. Plants

Add a little bit of life to your dorm room by packing some plants! Either some small and hardy houseplants or even just fake plants will add some much-needed greenery and life to your space. Check out this list of plants that are perfect for dorm-life when considering which plant might be best for you.

4. Portable Speaker

Music makes everything more fun, and having a speaker to bring on all your first-year adventures is a great idea. From jamming out in your room to having some music as you chill outside with your friends, a speaker will come in handy countless times throughout your freshman year.

5. Vacuum

Investing in a small handheld vacuum is a great way to keep your living space clean and comfortable. Between all the snacks and outdoor debris getting tracked in, dorm living can be messy, so make sure you have a way to keep your room clean for the whole year.

6. Water Filter

Whether you choose to use a Britta pitcher or some other type of water filter, having filtered water available in your dorm is a must-have. Save yourself the trouble of walking to the water fountain constantly and invest in a good quality water filter that will be useful for the rest of your college experience.

7. Desk lamp

A desk lamp is an important addition to any dorm room, especially when living with a roommate. Extra light is always helpful, and a desk lamp allows you to study late at night or early in the morning without disturbing your roommate.

8. Sewing Kit

A small sewing kit allows students to mend clothes and repair any wear and tear that may occur over the course of the year. Make sure that safety pins are included in the kit so last-minute alterations on clothes can be made if needed.

9. Deck of Cards/Games

Having a deck of cards or whatever games you enjoy with you is a great way to spend time with friends and get to know new people. Having a game to play with friends is something you won’t regret.

10. Photos

There is something so special about having printed photos of all your favorite memories and experiences. Consider taking the time to print out some photos to either frame or hang around your room so you can take some of your good memories with you as you start this new adventure.
