While acceptance of the LGBTQ+ community has risen a lot over the past few decades, there is still plenty of discrimination against the community. There is also still a lack of inclusion for members of the community. However, it doesn’t have to be this way and there are many ways to provide this inclusion.

One of the easiest ways to be more inclusive is to educate yourself about the LGBTQ+ community. Learning about different genders and sexualities is a good step in understanding the community a little better.

It may also be important to learn about the experiences and history of LGBTQ+ people. Try asking the person questions and do not worry about saying something wrong; you can always fix your mistakes. Just make sure to own up to the mistake and apologize if you end up making one.

Listening to the person and giving them the time and space to tell their story also helps provide a more welcoming atmosphere. Using positive affirmations and telling the person that you support them lets them know that they belong and can be open.

Another way to be inclusive is to not make assumptions about the LGBTQ+ community. Do not assume that someone is gay, bisexual et cetera  as it can create an unwelcoming environment. Treat them the same way as you would anyone else and try not to be judgmental or biased.

Also, do not try to change a person’s sexuality. By doing do, you are insinuating that there is something wrong with the person and with being part of the LGBTQ+ community. This can make people less comfortable with opening up and talking about their sexuality.

There also needs to be more representation of the LGBTQ+ community It’s important to support and encourage conversations around different forms of media that feature LGBTQ+ themes, including books, movies and music. It’s also important to remember to use the proper pronouns when referring to someone.

Shutting down anti-LGBTQ+ behavior is another crucial step to provide inclusivity. If you see someone being called a homophobic slur or getting bullied because of their sexuality, step in and intervene. Standing up to someone is much easier said than done, but it will show that you support the person and are on their side if you do.

At the University of Idaho, there is the LGBTQA office. Its mission is to provide a safe and non-judgmental place for people in the LGBTQ+ community where they can openly express themselves. Members even put up posters and hold different events such as educational programs, social events and lunch discussions. These events can be attended by both students and faculty members at the university.

When you come across someone who is part of the LGBTQ+ community, it is important to create a safe and welcoming environment for them and make sure they are represented and included.
