Early morning music

The best tunes for your early morning commute, breakfast or routine

Every morning could use a little more music. Whether it be driving or walking to work, preparing breakfast or starting your morning routine, most mornings need something to wake up the senses. A good playlist can do just that.

Hailey Stewart | Argonaut

It can be hard to get used to lazy mornings without an alarm in the summer. For those that have to get up and get out for the day, here are the songs that should be on your morning playlist.

Set them as your alarm, dance around before heading out the door or blast them in your car.

“Feel It Still” — Portugal. The Man

This band stumbled upon a mix of pop and soul gold with “Feel It Still.” The beat is light and airy and has just the right amount of rock.

It may be nearly a year old, but “Feel It Still” is still a fresh summer beat, perfect to pump up a morning commute. Just try not to jive too much behind the wheel.

“Shape of You” — Ed Sheeran

This song also uses its instruments well. It’s catchy and singable. Not too fast. Not too slow.

The song flourished on the Top 100 List for so long, the New York Times even asked, “How is he doing this?”

The answer: “Shape of You” alternates just four main chords throughout the entire track, making the ultimate head-bobbing tune.

“Us” — James Bay, featuring Alicia Keys

James Bay is known for heavy beats and a soft, melodic tone. “Us,” from his 2018 “Electric Light” brings out his softer side. Alicia Keys follows the ballad smooth as honey.

While this track might not jolt awake in the morning, it will get you out of bed singing to the right tune.

“In the Morning” — Jay Prince

To bring a little more R&B to your morning, Jay Prince has the perfect track. It’s upbeat and quick on the tempo, against his smooth, slow vocals.

“In the Morning” is fresh and bright. This track comes of Prince’s 2018 album “Cherish.”

“Start Again” — OneRepublic, featuring Logic

Released as a single with the second season of Netflix’s “13 Reasons Why,” this track brings a heavy beat and OneRepublic’s poppy sound to a great song with Logic.

OneRepublic brings a simple approach to the chorus, while Logic features an intricate mix to the band’s usual style.

“New Light” — John Mayer

Remember how John Mayer used to put out the best music for leisurely car rides or a day of reading in the sun? Well, his soft, melodic sound is back in this track.

“New Light” has just the right amount of 2018 pop against Mayer’s well-known guitar riffs.

Released as just a single for now, fans of Mayer could definitely get used to this revamped version of his old sound.
