Scary on the big screen — Vandal Entertainment will play a “Nightmare on Elm Street” and “Annabelle: Creation” for Halloween

This Halloween, ASUI Vandal Entertainment is bringing a spooky Halloween film double feature night to the Borah Theater in the Bruce Pitman Center.

From 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. Tuesday, students and community members can see “A Nightmare on Elm Street” (1984) and “Annabelle: Creation” (2017) for free.

Wes Craven’s “A Nightmare on Elm Street” is a cult classic about Freddy Kruger, a murderer that comes to execute teenagers in their dreams.

“A Nightmare on Elm Street is my favorite horror movie and I watched it for the first time when I was three, and I’ve loved it ever since,” said UI sophomore Kyle Nye.

David Sandberg’s “Annabelle: Creation” is a film based off of the haunted Raggedy Anne doll known as Annabelle that is on display in a glass box at The Warren’s Occult Museum in Monroe, Connecticut. In the film, Annabelle has a life of its own.

“I enjoy the diversity between the films,” said UI freshman Valerie Denton. “It would be one thing having two super recent horror films that may or may not even scare people but having a classic and a newer movie really gives a nice sense of variety.”

UI freshman Arielle Kessler said she loves the variety of Halloween-related events the university offers.

“Halloween this year is so stocked with them but I’m definitely going to see the movies,” Kessler said.

Nye said the movies offer something for college students to look forward to, since they are too old to go trick-or-treating.

“We still get to actually enjoy the holiday by showing up in costume and just watching unsettling and scary movies.” Nye said.
