The Dean of Students Office has officially started enforcing the expanded Student Code of Conduct, which now allows the University of Idaho to take disciplinary action on students if they engage in off-campus conduct that violates the Student Code of Conduct. Craig Chatriand, associate dean of students, said his office will look at the cases that arise individually and contextually.

Of course, this has been added in the name of safety for University of Idaho students.
As students, we really have to wonder about the span of this new policy. It would be nice if we could get some clear answers — right now, not over time — from our own university about what it means and how far it extends.
Even if UI administrators claim the policy will not be far-reaching and unreasonable, we can’t be sure it won’t. It isn’t such a stretch to see the policy go in that direction. Whether the university gives us clear answers or not, we can certainly give the university a clear response: back off.
UI has become far too involved in our liberties. I’m not just speaking as a student, but also as an American citizen who exists outside of our precious school. Universities are going far beyond the limits of an educational institution, deciding they know how to ensure our safety better than we do. For example, UI Interim President Don Burnett recently testified against Senate Bill 1254, which would allow retired law enforcement officers and anyone 21 years or older with an Idaho enhanced conceal carry permit to carry a gun on campus.
Burnett, on behalf of UI and the Higher Education Presidents Council, said bringing guns on campus is not a good idea, as the school is committed to providing a safe living and learning environment.
Of course, Mr. President. Because, as we have seen in recent years with schools like Sandy Hook, gun-free zones are certainly the safest living and learning environments for children and adults alike.
It’s ludicrous to allow people in our school’s administration to have any hand in our safety, especially when they expanded the school’s jurisdiction to reach beyond the campus. Our school officials — like so many others around the country — know nothing about ensuring our safety.
Please back off, UI officials, and discontinue thinking about our safety. We, the student body of UI, are adults and we can take care of ourselves — at least, we could if you’d let us.
