Kiser receives first honor

After a sixth-place finish at the Sundodger Invitational on Saturday, Idaho senior Hannah Kiser earned Western Athletic Conference women’s Cross Country Athlete of the Week for the week of Sept. 9-15. It was Kiser’s first race of the season.

Kiser’s time of 20:50.0 in the women’s 6-kilometer race was the second fastest time for an Idaho athlete on the course. The only time faster was her 2012 time of 20:45.21. Kiser helped lead Idaho to 87 points and a third-place overall finish only falling to nationally ranked Washington and regionally ranked Oregon State.

“This was a great start to Hannah’s senior year,” Idaho coach Wayne Phipps said. “It’s always nice to see your athletes being recognized for their hard work and accomplishments.”

Epps named to Biletnikoff Watch List

Idaho junior receiver Dezmon Epps, a junior college transfer from the City College of San Francisco, has been added to the Biletnikoff Award Watch List as one of the nation’s top receivers. In his first season as a Vandal, Epps has grabbed 23 catches for 265 yards. Epps has yet to find the end zone so far this season.

“Probably his biggest strength is his competitiveness– his will to be great,” Idaho coach Paul Petrino said. “He tries to win every route that he has in practice. He works hard every day.”

Epps also impressed at the junior college level where he was a 2012 Community College All-American.

Men’s basketball schedule finalized

The final games have been added and the 2013-14 men’s basketball schedule has been finalized. In addition to trips to Oklahoma and Portland, and a Dec. 7 hosting of Washington State, Idaho has a respectable nonconference schedule.

The Vandals make two trips to Boise this season to play Boise State on Nov. 27 and Idaho State on Dec. 20.

Early home games include a season opener against Western Illinois on Nov. 9 and a game against Northwest Nazarene on Nov. 16.

Western Athletic Conference play begins Jan. 2 against Missouri-Kansas City.

“The WAC has totally changed,” Idaho coach Don Verlin said. “We obviously know about New Mexico State and how good they are, and I haven’t seen any of the preseason polls but I expect they will be picked to win the league. I know a lot about Seattle U because we’ve played them for about the past five years and I like what they have coming back. Outside of that, it’s going to be kind of a new conference season.”
