The University of Idaho women’s soccer team delivered a memorable performance Thursday afternoon, defeating Portland State 2-0 on the road while giving head coach Jeremy Clevenger a milestone victory: the 100th win of his career.
The Vandals celebrated the achievement with a strong all-around effort, combining timely offensive production with another impressive defensive performance. The victory improved Idaho’s overall record to 9-3-5 and its Big Sky Conference record to 3-1-3, adding another important result to the team’s conference campaign.
Idaho opened the scoring in the 24th minute when senior Tori Peters found the back of the net for her first collegiate goal. Following a short corner kick, Hallie Prinos-Grumbach delivered the ball into the penalty area, where Peters connected with a powerful right-footed shot from approximately 12 yards out. Her shot found the upper center of the net, giving Idaho a 1-0 advantage.
Peters’ breakthrough goal was particularly meaningful as the senior recorded her first collegiate score in an important conference matchup. Prinos-Grumbach and Mia Boltz were credited with assists on the play.
The Vandals wasted little time adding to their lead after halftime. Just three minutes into the second half, freshman Quinn Mueller scored her first collegiate goal to put Idaho ahead 2-0.
The scoring opportunity developed when Boltz beat a Portland State defender along the left side before sending a pass across the box. Mueller collected the ball and fired a right-footed shot from 12 yards out, placing it just underneath the crossbar.
The goal gave Idaho valuable breathing room and provided another memorable moment, as two Vandals recorded their first collegiate goals in the same game.
Although Portland State finished with a 15-13 advantage in total shots, Idaho’s defense remained composed and effective when it mattered most. The Vandals limited the Vikings to just four shots on goal, while Idaho recorded five.
Goalkeeper Paula Flores played an important role in preserving the shutout, finishing with four saves. Three of those stops came in the second half as Portland State increased its offensive pressure.
The performance also marked Flores’ 27th career shutout, another impressive milestone for the Idaho goalkeeper.
The victory was especially significant for Clevenger, who reached 100 career wins as head coach of the Vandals. Reaching the century mark represents a major accomplishment and reflects the consistency, commitment and competitive culture built within the Idaho women’s soccer program.
This milestone victory was made even more memorable by the contributions of the entire team. From Peters’ opening goal and Mueller’s second-half finish to Flores’ work in goal and the defensive unit’s ability to withstand Portland State’s pressure, Idaho demonstrated the balanced performance necessary to earn a conference road victory.
The Vandals will look to carry that momentum into their next Big Sky Conference matchup against Montana on Sunday at noon Pacific time.
Thursday’s 2-0 victory will be remembered not only for the two first-time collegiate goal scorers and another defensive shutout, but also for marking a significant chapter in Idaho soccer history. With his 100th career victory, Clevenger and the Vandals continued building momentum toward the remainder of their conference season.
For Idaho, it was a milestone afternoon made possible by a complete team effort.
The Vandals next matchup will be in Missoula, Montana against rival Montana on Sunday, November 1 at 12 p.m.
