In Washington, D.C., I see firsthand how easily government spending can grow and how difficult it can be for taxpayers to follow where their money goes.
It’s one of the reasons I’ve long believed that fiscal responsibility requires more than promises to spend wisely. It requires transparency and accountability. After all, how can taxpayers hold the government responsible for spending they can’t see?
That principle is just as important in Boise as it is in Washington, D.C.
Most Idahoans probably don’t give much thought to the State Controller’s Office. But they should. The Controller oversees the state’s accounting, payroll, financial reporting, and payments. It’s an office with enormous responsibility, even if much of its work happens outside the public spotlight.
Brandon Woolf and I have worked together for many years, dating back to my time in the Idaho Legislature and continuing during my service in Congress. We’re both lifelong Idahoans who believe deeply in our state, share Republican values, and believe good government begins with responsibility to the people it serves.
For more than a decade, Brandon has served as Idaho’s State Controller. During his tenure, one of the most significant developments has been the expansion of public access to government financial information.
Through Transparent Idaho, taxpayers can examine revenues, expenditures, and other financial information from state and local governments. Just as importantly, they can compare information across jurisdictions, bringing greater visibility to how public dollars are managed throughout Idaho.
Think about the value of that.
A taxpayer in Idaho Falls can examine how public money is managed in other communities. A resident of rural Idaho can compare financial information with larger jurisdictions. Citizens can ask questions about spending priorities, examine differences, and better understand the decisions made by their elected officials.
That’s what meaningful transparency looks like. Under Brandon’s leadership, the Controller’s Office has worked to make financial information more accessible, understandable, and useful to the people who pay the bills. It’s not enough to publish a report and declare government open. Taxpayers need information they can actually use to ask questions and hold their elected officials accountable.
I’ve always believed Idaho’s greatest strength is its people. They work hard, support their families, build businesses, and contribute to their communities. They understand the value of a dollar because they know what it takes to earn one.
Government should demonstrate that same respect for their money. Brandon’s work to expand financial transparency reflects that responsibility and gives Idahoans greater insight into how their tax dollars are managed. Idaho taxpayers deserve nothing less, and thanks to Brandon, they have greater access to the information they need to hold government accountable.
On November 3, I encourage you to cast your vote for this great Idahoan so Brandon can continue his valuable work as our Idaho State Controller.
