The University of Idaho men’s golf team traveled to Monterrey, Mexico, on Oct. 26-27 to compete in the Monterrey Collegiate Classic at Club Campestre Monterrey, hosted by George Washington University. The course played at 7,151 yards and a par of 72. The Vandals finished eighth out of 10 teams with a three-round total of 899 (+35).

Idaho got off to a shaky start, finishing the first round at 10-over-par. The Vandals recorded the third-highest team score of the round, ahead of Utah Tech and Eastern Washington, which both finished at 12-over-par.

The second round brought a significant turnaround. Idaho recorded the lowest team score of the tournament’s second round, shooting 285 (-3). Utah Tech followed closely with a 287 (-1). The strong performance moved the Vandals into second place on the leaderboard at 2-over-par, trailing Howard.

However, Idaho struggled to maintain its momentum in the final round, shooting 316 (+28), the highest team score of the round. The result dropped the Vandals six spots to eighth place at 35-over-par, behind Drexel and North Dakota State, which tied for sixth at 23-over-par.

Despite the difficult finish, Idaho had several individual highlights throughout the tournament. Henrik Koglin led the Vandals, tying for 23rd place with rounds of 73-69-80 for a three-round total of 222 (+6).

Koglin opened with a 1-over-par round before delivering one of Idaho’s strongest performances of the tournament in the second round. He shot 3-under-par, recording the fifth-lowest individual score of the round. However, an 8-over-par third round dropped him from a tie for third place after the second round to a tie for 23rd overall.

Brae Rogalczyk followed Koglin, tying for 31st place with rounds of 74-74-78 for a total of 226 (+10). Ben Buchanan tied for 37th place after shooting 78-71-79 for a total of 228 (+12). Buchanan’s second-round 71 placed him 1-under-par for the round.

Carter Frisby finished 54th with rounds of 73-83-79 for a total of 235 (+19). Charley Simpson tied for 55th after carding rounds of 81-71-84 for a total of 236 (+20). Simpson also delivered a strong second round, shooting 1-under-par. Moritz Ampenberger competed as an individual and tied for 49th place with rounds of 77-80-76 for a total of 233 (+17).

The tournament featured a competitive field, but Idaho’s inconsistent performance across the three rounds proved costly. No team finished the tournament at par or better. George Washington claimed first place at 1-over-par, finishing strong with an 11-under-par final round. Loyola Maryland took second at 4-over-par after shooting 5-under-par in the third round.

The Monterrey Collegiate Classic marks the end of Idaho’s fall schedule. The Vandals will return to competition Feb. 1-2 at the Bill Cullum Invitational, hosted by California State University, Northridge.
