Nearly 80% of UI students surveyed by the Argonaut said they will support the passage of Proposition 1 in the Nov.3 election.
In a convenience sampling survey conducted by Argonaut reporters of 239 students last week, 79.5% (190) said they would vote yes, while 20.5% (49) said they would vote no.
Proposition 1, a “measure creating right to abortion before fetus viability, and post-viability to protect health; right to privacy; healthcare provider liability protections,” as stated on voteidaho.gov, seeks to largely decriminalize abortion.
The ballot measure, if passed, would reverse most of Idaho’s strict abortion laws triggered by the Supreme Court’s striking down of Roe v. Wade in 2022. Parental consent would still be required for those under 18 seeking an abortion. Medical professionals have generally agreed that fetus viability begins at about 24 weeks of pregnancy.
More information on Proposition 1 can be found at voteidaho.gov as well as in an article previously published by the Argonaut.
The survey conducted was unscientific, with a 5% plus or minus margin of error.
