The University of Idaho cross country teams traveled to Spokane, Washington, for the Whitworth Invitational, where the Vandal men put together one of their better team performances of the season. Idaho finished with a strong group effort in the men’s 8K, while the women competed with a smaller lineup and still produced several notable individual results.

The meet gave Idaho another chance to test its runners as the season moves closer to championship competition. Several Vandals recorded either personal or season bests, providing signs of progress throughout both sides of the program.

Freshman Miles Lechtenberg once again led the way for the Idaho men. Lechtenberg finished the 8K in 24:15.8, placing inside the top 10 while also setting a new personal record.

The result adds another impressive performance to what has been a promising first collegiate season for Lechtenberg. The freshman has been near the front of Idaho’s lineup throughout the fall, and his latest race showed his ability to improve while competing against a larger field.

Lechtenberg’s performance was also important for Idaho’s overall team score. His finish gave the Vandals a strong starting point at the front of their five scoring runners and helped the team put together one of its best showings of the season.

Sophomore Evan Jones followed closely behind, finishing 18th with a time of 24:38.7. Jones has also been a reliable contributor for Idaho this season, and his performance in Spokane kept him near the top of the Vandal lineup.

The combination of Lechtenberg and Jones gave Idaho two runners near the front of the field. Their results, along with the performances behind them, allowed the Vandals to put together a competitive team score.

Junior James Hodgson and sophomore Jaysen Rodriguez were among the other Idaho runners who recorded either season or personal bests. Their improvement added depth to the lineup and helped the Vandals produce a stronger overall result.

Rodriguez’s race was also something head coach highlighted following the meet. The coach pointed to the sophomore’s progress as another encouraging sign for a team that is continuing to develop as the season moves forward.

One of the biggest highlights for the men, however, came from freshman Luca Wagner. Competing in his first-ever collegiate cross country meet, Wagner finished as Idaho’s fourth runner.

Wagner’s race became stronger as it went on. He moved up throughout the 8K and finished well, giving the Vandals an important contribution in his collegiate debut. His ability to gain positions during the race stood out to the coaching staff and provides Idaho with another runner to watch as the season progresses.

The men’s performance was not simply built around one runner. Lechtenberg’s top-10 finish, Jones’ 18th-place result, the improvement from Hodgson and Rodriguez, and Wagner’s debut all combined to give Idaho a well-rounded showing.

The women entered the meet with fewer runners and were unable to record a team score. Despite that, the Vandals still had individual performances worth noting in the 6K.

Senior Mary Nakamura was the first Idaho woman across the finish line, posting a season-best time of 22:25.1. Nakamura has continued to make progress throughout the season, and her result in Spokane represented another step forward.

Junior Malia Chipouras followed Nakamura with a personal-best time of 22:46.7. Chipouras’ result was one of the more encouraging individual developments of the meet, as she lowered her previous best while competing in the 6K.

The coaching staff specifically mentioned both Nakamura and Chipouras after the race. Nakamura was praised for putting together a solid race as she continues to improve, while Chipouras was recognized for taking a more aggressive approach during her competition.

Those individual efforts were important for the women despite not having enough runners to qualify for a team score. Nakamura’s season best and Chipouras’ personal record gave the group positive takeaways heading into its next meet.

The Whitworth Invitational also gave Idaho another chance to evaluate where its runners stand with the most important part of the season approaching. The continued improvement across the men’s lineup, along with the progress shown by Nakamura and Chipouras, gives the Vandals several positives to carry forward.

For the men, Lechtenberg remains one of the team’s biggest contributors, while Jones has established himself as another reliable runner near the front. Wagner’s debut could also give Idaho additional depth moving forward, particularly as he gains more collegiate racing experience.

The Vandals will not have to wait long for their next test. Idaho will travel to Eugene, Oregon, on Friday, Oct. 9, for the Bill Dellinger Invitational.

The Dellinger Invitational will present a significantly larger challenge, with Idaho preparing to compete at one of the premier meets on its schedule. The level of competition will give the Vandals a valuable chance to see how their progress translates against some of the nation’s top programs.

Following the Whitworth Invitational, the coaching staff expressed confidence in the direction of both teams. With the men showing improvement across the lineup and the women producing season and personal bests despite a limited field, Idaho enters the next week with several positives to build upon.

The Whitworth meet may have been another stop on the schedule, but it provided Idaho with evidence that its runners are moving in the right direction. Lechtenberg’s personal best, Jones’ strong finish, Wagner’s collegiate debut and the improvements from Hodgson and Rodriguez gave the men plenty to take away. Nakamura and Chipouras provided similar encouragement on the women’s side.

Now, Idaho will reset and prepare for Eugene. With the Bill Dellinger Invitational on Friday,October 9. Once there, the Vandals will face one of their biggest tests of the season and another chance to measure their progress against elite competition.
