Local candidates affiliated with the Latah County Democrats spoke about critical campaign issues and goals at their biannual “friendraising party” event on Tuesday, Sept. 15. The event started off with beverages, food, conversation and live music.
Event host Tim Gresback stated that, “We have forward thinking candidates that need support that can help change the balance of power within the state” when asked about his reasoning for hosting the event.
County and district campaign manager Ian Schlater stated that quote, “Idaho is ready for a change,” and that the people who represent Latah County don’t support them. “Our candidates are in communities across District 6 every day. They are talking with folks, going to school board meetings, and are highly qualified to know what Idaho needs.”
Candidates took to the floor to provide introductions and discuss their campaign platforms. Issues discussed were women’s healthcare, public lands, education, and lowering property taxes, with women’s healthcare and public lands being the most discussed.
On the topic of public lands, District 2 Commissioner candidate Laura Heinse highlighted conservation of farmland and resources, water preservation, and wildfire readiness. House Seat 6B candidate Kathy Dawes also criticized current public officials for making private medical decisions while lacking a medical degree.
Attendees were Idaho Senate candidate Robin Weldy, Idaho Attorney General candidate Lori Hickman, House Seat 6B candidate Kathy Dawes, Latah County Clerk candidate Shannon May, District 1 Commissioner candidate Carol Wells, District 2 Commissioner candidate Laura Heinse, and Treasurer incumbent BJ Swanson.
