The University of Idaho women’s soccer team battled through a physical road matchup Thursday night but came away on the wrong side of a 1-0 result against the University of San Francisco at Negoesco Stadium.
The loss moved Idaho to 5-2-1 on the season, while San Francisco improved to 3-3-1. Despite the final score, the Vandals controlled much of the offensive action, creating numerous opportunities and keeping pressure on the Dons throughout the match.
Neither team was able to break through during the opening 45 minutes. Idaho and San Francisco entered halftime tied 0-0, with both defenses successfully limiting dangerous scoring chances. The Vandals remained organized defensively while continuing to search for opportunities to attack.
The breakthrough finally came in the 55th minute, when San Francisco found the back of the net thanks to senior forward Olivia Lukrofka to take a 1-0 lead.
For Idaho, however, the goal did not change the team’s approach. The Vandals continued pushing forward and generated a significant number of chances as they searched for an equalizer.
Idaho ultimately finished the match with a 17-5 advantage in shots, more than tripling San Francisco’s total.
The Vandals also recorded seven shots on goal, demonstrating their ability to create opportunities even though they could not convert one into a goal.
Alyssa Hamilton and Mia Boltz led Idaho’s attack with four shots apiece. Their activity was part of an overall offensive performance that repeatedly tested the San Francisco defense.
While Idaho was unable to find an equalizer, the Vandals’ defense also kept the Dons from generating sustained offensive pressure.
San Francisco’s five total shots were the second-fewest Idaho has allowed in a match this season, according to the University of Idaho’s game recap.
The contest was physical from start to finish, with the teams combining for 21 fouls. The intensity was evident as both sides competed for possession and fought for space in the midfield.
For Idaho, the result was a frustrating conclusion to a match in which the statistics reflected a strong attacking effort. The Vandals generated more than three times as many shots as their opponent and put seven attempts on frame, but San Francisco’s defense managed to preserve its one-goal advantage through the final whistle.
The defeat also ended a stretch of strong results for Idaho. The Vandals entered the game having defeated Grand Canyon 1-0 on Sept. 10, their second home victory of the season at the time. That match extended Idaho’s shutout streak to four consecutive games, with goalkeeper Paula Flores recording her 22nd career shutout.
Now, Idaho will have an opportunity to respond quickly. The Vandals remain in California for the final match of their road trip, traveling to face UC Davis on Sunday afternoon. The game is scheduled for a 1 p.m. PT kickoff at Aggie Soccer Field.
After creating 17 shots against San Francisco, Idaho will look to turn that offensive production into goals against UC Davis. The Vandals will also look to regain their defensive rhythm after allowing their first goal since the Grand Canyon match.
Thursday’s 1-0 loss showed that Idaho was capable of controlling large portions of the game despite falling behind. The challenge Sunday will be converting that pressure into the result the Vandals were unable to secure in San Francisco. With the nonconference schedule continuing, Idaho will have another chance to build momentum and close its California trip on a positive note.
The Vandals next matchup will be away against Big Sky Conference member, UC Davis on Sunday, September 20 at 1 p.m.
