Beginning this upcoming Monday, Aug. 31, the University of Idaho’s campus entrance at Perimeter Drive and State Highway 8 will be closed to all traffic while they start construction to replace the bridge. The closure is expected to last until May 2027.
The bridge has been due for construction to address high water events, along with the recent flooding which highlighted the issues in the structure and surrounding creek. As stated in an email from Brian Foisey, VP for the Division of Finance and Administration, replacing the bridge is necessary to protect the safety of everybody who uses this route.
Despite the inconvenient timing at the start of the Fall 2026 semester, completing the work now is critical, as seasonal weather and rising creek flows later in the year could significantly increase construction risk and threaten the project.
Students will have to plan new commutes following the posted detours. SMART Transit routes will also be adjusted, with detours directing traffic to Stadium Drive and Line Street.
Nez Perce Drive remains closed, but is expected to reopen in the first week of September. This reopening will help to ease traffic impacts as the bridge project begins. Parking along Perimeter Drive across Guy Wicks Field will remain available during this project, however, Paradise Path will be closed along the bridge and rerouted to the north side of State Highway 8.
