Although the 2026 outdoor track and field season has only just begun, one athlete has already begun to separate herself from the rest of the competition. Junior Rhyan Madden has emerged as a standout performer for the University of Idaho’s track and field team thanks to her speed, discipline and versatility that have made an early impact.
Competing primarily in the 400-meter hurdles while also contributing to the 4×400-meter relay team, Madden has steadily built her reputation over the past two seasons. Now, as a junior, she is putting together some of her most complete performances yet, signaling that she may be on the verge of a true breakout year.
Madden’s journey began in the 2023-24 season, where she quickly proved she could compete at the conference level. As a freshman, she wasted no time making her presence known. At the 2024 Whitworth Peace Meet, Madden played a key role in Idaho’s success, helping the 4×400-meter relay team capture first place.
She also delivered an impressive individual performance, placing second in the 400-meter hurdles as well. These early accomplishments demonstrated her potential as both a team player and an individual competitor.
Her consistency and determination ultimately earned her a spot at the 2024 Big Sky Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championship, where she competed in the 400-meter hurdles and gained valuable experience against some of the top athletes in the conference.
Building on that strong freshman start, Madden returned in the 2024-25 season with increased confidence and a clear focus on improvement. As a sophomore, she continued to excel in relay events while refining her technique in the hurdles.
One of her season highlights came at the Lauren McCluskey Memorial, where she once again helped the Vandals secure a first-place finish in the 4×400-meter relay.
Her ability to perform in high-pressure situations was further showcased at the 2025 Big Sky Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships, where she contributed to a third-place finish in the 4×400-meter relay.
Individually, Madden reached a new milestone at the 2025 Big Sky Outdoor Championships, recording a personal best in the 400-meter hurdles and finishing sixth overall. This performance not only marked a significant step forward in her development but also established her as a rising competitor within the conference.
Now, currently in her junior season, Madden has taken another leap forward. The 2026 season has already featured some of her strongest performances to date, as she continues to lower her times and compete with greater confidence.
At the 2026 Sam Adams Classic, Madden delivered an outstanding showing, placing second in the 400-meter hurdles while also helping her relay team secure a first-place finish in the 4×400-meter relay, with a 45.16 second time, which broke the previous school record by 0.20 seconds.
Her ability to consistently place near the top of competitive fields has quickly made her one of Idaho’s most reliable performers this season. As it stands, Madden is currently ranked among the top five in the Big Sky Conference in the 400-meter hurdles, a testament to her hard work and steady progression.
As the season continues, Madden’s trajectory suggests that even bigger performances may be on the horizon. With each meet, she gains more confidence and experience, putting herself in a position to contend for top finishes at the conference level.
Whether she is chasing a new personal record or anchoring a relay team in a crucial race, Madden is proving that she belongs among the best in the Big Sky. With her junior season in full swing, Madden is not just continuing her development; she is stepping into the spotlight.
Her journey from a young freshman to a key contributor has been defined by steady growth and resilience. Madden isn’t just competing; she’ssprinting into a breakout year, leaving her mark on Idaho track with every stride.
