On Friday, Oct. 31, at 7:30 p.m., the Lionel Hampton School of Music held Tubaween, a night full of spooky performances by the tuba, euphonium and trombone studio.

The theme of the night was pirates. Performing students and faculty dressed in pirate outfits as they performed as soloists and in ensembles.

The tuba and euphonium studio is directed by Mark Thiele, and the trombone studio is directed by Jenny Kellogg.

Throughout the night, solo pieces, such as “Sarabanda and Gavotta” by Arcangello Corelli, “Modal Suite” by Kayla Roth, “Andante” by Antonio Capuzzi, “Andante and Alegro” by Joseph Edouard Barat, “‘Child’s Play’ Sonata” by Barbara York and “Stutter Step” by Benjamin Horne, were performed by tubas and euphonium soloists.

Ensemble performances included pieces, “Galliard Battaglia, SSWV 59” by Samuel Schmidt, “Ave Maria, S. 20” by Franz Liszt and “Calypso” by Adam Rapa, performed by tubas and euphoniums.

Concluding the concert were pirate themed pieces, such as “Medley from Pirates of the Caribbean” by Klaus Bedelt and “Sea Shanty Medley” by Trad.

“Though not all of the performances in the school of music are everyone’s cup of tea, the amount of humor and enjoyability in Tubaween is for everyone,” said Cassie Nelson, a University of Idaho music student.

Students showed up to the performances dressed in costumes to participate in the intermission costume contest. This contest allowed students to come up on stage and show off their costumes to the rest of the audience.

The concert presented an interactive performance, with humoring dialogue and acting, audience interaction where everyone got up and danced and a feature of the Vandal Fight Song at the end, leaving the crowd in a standing ovation.

“I thought it was awesome,” said UI student Micheal Green.
