ASUI passed a senate resolution to ask Idaho lawmakers to not cut Diversity, Equity and Inclusion programs at the University of Idaho at this week’s ASUI meeting on Dec. 4.

“I think it’s really important that we express our disappointment in our legislators in the state of Idaho,” Senator Julissa McDowell said.

Senator Anya Zuercher also expressed her discontent for the DEI offices being taken away.

“These areas on campus are what keep students here and make college accessible for everyone,” Zuercher said.

Another bill was unanimously passed acknowledging the importance of DEI programs at UI and the vital contribution that the faculty and staff of these offices bring to the students.

ASUI welcomed their new senators at the meeting. Izaak Krohn, Erika Amaral, Andrea Leal, Zoha Aqeel and Binod Khadka were sworn in after the meeting was concluded.

Students can expect Foodies for Finals to return this year after a bill that would purchase $250 worth of food and energy drinks was passed.

“Often times during finals we don’t have time to get our own food or even think about our own nutrition,” Senator Alexa Benitez said.

A bill was introduced that would release the voting numbers for the 2024 ASUI Senate election.

Zuercher stated that she wanted the voting numbers released for the presidential election last Spring. She said that it allows the new senators to see their outreach and how they could improve in the future.

A bill that would donate $800 to the Vandal Food Pantry for the holiday season was unanimously approved.

“It’s really important that students are not only getting properly fed but getting fed nutritious options,” Senator Arielle Hebison said.

The next resolution would allocate $50 to the purchasing of tabling supplies to help improve student engagement.

“This is going to help us improve the student engagement by providing the supplies and will also show that ASUI is welcoming and ready to help,” Senator Zoha Aqueel said.

Zuercher was reinstated as Pro-Tempore for the next semester.
