BREAKING: Gunshots fired near South Almon Street residence, suspect in custody

UPDATE – 12:05 p.m.

Thomas Adams, 54, was arrested this morning and charged with unlawful discharge of weapons, disturbing the peace and resisting and obstructing officers, according to a Moscow Police Department Facebook post.

Adams was transferred to the Latah County Jail. Officers confirmed that the 100 block of South Almon Street is now safe and said there is no further threat to the community, the post said.

UPDATE – 8:21 a.m.

The suspect is in custody, according to a Vandal alert sent at 8:21 a.m. All roads are open, and the “shelter in place” order has been lifted.

UPDATE – 8:15 a.m.

Moscow police are still working to apprehend the suspect near the 100 block of South Almon Street, according to a Moscow Police Department Facebook post update.

Latah County regional SWAT team, Idaho State Police, Pullman Police Department, Washington State University Police and Nez Perce County Sheriff’s Office are all assisting Moscow police with the barricaded suspect currently, the post said.

More roads have been closed, although the post did not specify which ones. People are encouraged to avoid the area altogether.

UPDATE – 7:39 a.m.

A Vandal mail email sent at 7:39 a.m. confirmed that University of Idaho will hold classes as regularly scheduled.

Moscow police are continuing to investigate the report of gunshots fired around 2 a.m. The police confirmed that the situation is contained to the area near South Almon Street.

Police have enacted a “shelter in place” order for residents in the area of Pullman Highway to A Street and from Washington Street to Lilly Street, according to the email.

If students decide to not attend classes because of the situation, they are to communicate with appropriate UI faculty, the email said.

ORIGINAL STORY

Moscow police responded to a report of gunshots near the 100 block South Almon Street early this morning.

The suspect has been identified and his location is known. According to a Moscow Police Department Facebook post, last updated at 5:33 a.m., there is a lone shooter who has “barricaded inside his residence.”

Police confirmed that multiple gunshots were fired. Officers are working to take the suspect into custody, according to the post.

Police are asking anyone in the vicinity of the 100 block of South Almon Street to shelter in place. Multiple roads are now closed including A Street and Pullman Road at Line Street, A Street at C Street, N. Main Street at D Street, Asbury and Almon at 6th Street and 3rd Street west of Main Street.

There have been no further updates to the Moscow Police Department Facebook post.

University of Idaho students received a Vandal Alert text at approximately 5 a.m. saying gunshots had been fired and students should “Stay inside. Secure doors.”

A second Vandal Alert was sent at 6:34 a.m. directing students to look at Vandal mail for more information. The email confirmed that gunshots were fire and the suspect has been identified and located. The email also said the situation is active and students in the vicinity of the reported gunfire should shelter in place.

There have been no updates about University of Idaho classes. Students should attend classes as usual.
