Sacramento State dominates in Big Sky women’s golf tournament

The Hornets hit eight under par to win their second championship of the spring

Sacramento State won their second championship of the spring as their women’s golf team hoisted the trophy on Wednesday. The team landed eight under-par with all five competitors landing in the top 15. Sophomore Caitlin Maurice hit five under-par to get a first-place score of 211. Second place wasn’t far behind as senior Jaelin Ishikawa of Eastern Washington landed four under-par.  

Sacramento State not only won the championship, but dominated. They landed eight strokes under-par while second place Montana State went eight over. Weber State and Northern Arizona were third and fourth going 10 and 18 strokes over respectively. Fifth place Northern Colorado and sixth place Eastern Washington fell far below as they hit +32 and +35. 

Idaho finished day one in fifth place but ended the tournament in seventh going 40 strokes over-par. Senior Vicky Tsai had the best score on the team with 222 points. Sophomore Yvonne Vinceri and graduate student Nattavadee Khunsri weren’t far behind with 225 and 227 points, respectively. Tsai received a spot on the all-conference second team while Vinceri was named to the third team and Khunsri received an honorable mention.  

The two teams under Idaho also struggled as Portland State went 51 strokes over-par. After PSU was the University of Montana, going 54 over par. Rounding out the slate was Idaho State University in tenth place. The Bengals hit 85 over-par to end with a score of 949, 93 points behind the Hornets.  

Although the women’s golf season has come to an end, the Big Sky men’s golf tournament will take place from April 24 – 26. Men’s tennis will round out the spring sports season with their tournament from April 27 – 30.
