Zombie movies perfect for the Halloween season

With the upcoming Halloween season, it’s time to look at some of the classics of horror cinema, and with all-night study sessions happening more frequently, there’s no genre of horror more relatable than zombie flicks. The undead, rising from their slumber, stumbling half delirious while muttering nonsensical words, craving the sweet nectar that will make them come alive. This is, of course, the perfect description of a college student.

So, whether you prefer classics or more modern adaptations, here are three zombie movies to watch when brain-dead.

Train to Busan

When in that perfect balance between completely awake but too tired to do anything, “Train to Busan” is a Korean horror flick that is engaging enough to keep you awake and emotional enough to keep you invested. Having a similar vibe to the American film “World War Z,” “Train to Busan” follows a father and his daughter as they try to escape to safety onboard a train, while avoiding the army of the undead that is swiftly following them. With great visuals, stunning performances and compelling characters, this movie somehow manages to be both beautiful and terrifying. The film can be watched on Amazon Prime.

 Army of Darkness

This movie follows the adventures of Ash Williams as he fights the undead… in the Middle Ages. It is a sometimes terrifying, sometimes funny, sometimes ridiculous misadventure that has turned into a cult classic. Despite coming out in 1992, the special effects utilize a great deal of stop-motion, giving the creatures an ethereal and terrifying appearance similar to Coraline. This, combined with massive sets, explosions and chainsaws, makes for a movie that is watchable. “Army of Darkness” is currently streaming on Peacock.

 Shaun of the Dead

A side-splitting comedy adventure, “Shaun of the Dead” is a hilarious response to the zombie stereotype. Like other zombie comedies such “Zombieland,” “The Dead Don’t Die” and “Cooties”, the zombies are portrayed in a humorous rather than morbid way. Unlike these other comedies, “Shaun of the dead” takes itself at least a little seriously, with a wonderful performance by Simon Pegg and Nick Frost. Amusing when you’re awake, meaningful when you’re drunk and life-changing when you’re half asleep, this movie is available to rent on amazon prime and Peacock.
