University of Idaho clarifies abortion memo

University policy did not change as a result of abortion law the memo said

Breaking News Graphic

Wednesday afternoon, University of Idaho released a second statement to university staff and students on the abortion memo originally released Sept. 23.

The statement, coming jointly from President Scott Green and Provost Torrey Lawrence, states that the memo “quickly took on a life of its own with misinformation, confusion, and emotion leading the conversation.”

Green continues to clarify that no university policies have been changed alongside the publishing of the memo, and that the point of the memo was to keep staff aware of state law. The statement also said that the penalties attached are criminal in nature, and the university does not conduct criminal investigations.

The statement also went on to clarify that the memo made no changes to the university’s academic freedom policy, and that the Vandal Health Center would still continue to provide reproductive health services to the Vandal community.

More guidance in the form of a FAQ is currently being developed. The Vandal Health Center can be reached online
