A panel will be in the Pitman Center International Ballroom on Friday, Sept. 23 at 7 p.m.

In the past half century since Roe v. Wade, no issue has divided Americans more than the question of abortion. And while the intensity of that division began with Roe, there are few signs that the Supreme Court’s decision in Dobbs overruling Roe has decreased that division. If anything, it has heightened it.

Yet while many Americans have strong convictions about abortion, few understand the legal questions about it. And the decision in Dobbs just made those questions more complicated. So whether you are pro-life or pro-choice, many questions remain. What did Dobbs do? Was it right? What does that mean for federal law about abortion now? For state law? For Idaho?

The Federalist Society believes an informed and civil public debate over these questions it is of the utmost importance. That’s why we have convened a panel of experts to debate at the Pitman Center on Friday, September 23 at 7:00 pm. in the International Ballroom. We want real engagement on the heart of the issue, so we brought in some heavy hitters on both sides. A former clerk for Justice Alito, author of the Dobbs opinion, and an attorney who litigates for Planned Parenthood. A pro-life philosophy professor from Baylor and a pro-choice political science professor here at the University of Idaho. And a federal judge for the Ninth Circuit, Hon. Lawrence Van Dyke, to moderate.

With Idaho at the forefront of the federal government’s post-Dobbs efforts to limit state laws restricting abortion, this is a tremendous opportunity for our community. But it is an opportunity to learn—not to rally or to protest. Our experts know they will learn much from each other through this debate, even though they will disagree. We hope you will too, and we look forward to seeing you next Friday. Admission is free, but civility is required.
