September and October are great months to hike in the Palouse as the summer’s heat begins to dissipate and seasons slowly change. Moscow isn’t far from many beautiful sights or scenic backdrops, and there’s quite a few right in our own backyard.

Wildfire smoke may be a concern this time of year for some, however, this shouldn’t prevent most from enjoying a few hours in the great outdoors. Regardless, it’s good to always be prepared when venturing into an unfamiliar area, and the University of Idaho’s Outdoor Program has an excellent booklet on Palouse Region Hikes and the recommended preparations.

Without further ado, here’s a list of five fun hikes that are local to the Moscow area.

1. The Arboretum

Although labeling the Arboretum a “hike” is something of a stretch, it’s worthy of the first mention for a number of reasons. It’s extremely close to campus and makes for a gorgeous walk that students will likely want to experience before the onset of winter.

It’s a great way for newcomers to stretch their legs, get out and kickstart their exploration of campus before venturing out into the greater Moscow area. It’s a beautiful plot of land that anyone can take a simple stroll through after class.

2. Headwaters Trail

This 5-mile loop is likely the most popular hike for Moscow Mountain and perhaps the most well-known trail in the area. Hiking and mountain-biking are a common sight here, given that it’s the perfect time of year. Dogs are welcome, but must be kept on a leash!

Regarded as a moderately challenging route, hikers can take this journey at their own pace to enjoy the scenic view and fields of wildflowers that will surely flank this hike north of Moscow.

3. Idler’s Rest Nature Preserve

A nicely maintained and well-kept park with easy-to-identify trails, Idler’s Rest is close to town. It’s an ideal location for small outings, family get-togethers or even trail running. Managed by The Palouse Land Trust, Idler’s Rest is worth checking out for an easy outdoor journey.

4. Spring Valley Reservoir

Beautiful year-round, Spring Valley Reservoir is a great place for not only hiking, but also swimming and fishing. There’s a loop around the entire reservoir that lets visitors enjoy the area and explore, as long as they don’t offend the flocks of geese and swans.

5. Virgil Phillips Farm Park

Super close to Moscow and perfect for a day hike, Virgil Phillips Farm Park has a wide variety of trails to choose from. This is a great place for beginners, bird-watchers and basket-toting picnickers alike.
