ASUI passed a resolution in support of Ukraine and prepared to finalize ballots for elections.

After introducing the resolution last week, ASUI voted unanimously to pass the resolution showing support to the people of Ukraine. The passage comes after a variety of students spoke the week before, showing that the distance between the UI campus and Ukraine is not as wide as it seems.  Senators voiced how others on campus, as well as themselves, have been directly impacted by the ongoing war.

“It’s important to consider what we as students can do from 6,000 miles away,” Sen. Ellie Erickson said. “The truth is we aren’t 6,000 miles away, as many of our friends and peers are being affected by this.”

In addition to passing the resolution, ASUI encouraged students to continue participating in the on-campus fundraising in support of the Ukrainian people. The final fundraiser will take place Thursday, hosted by Movimiento Activista Social in the ISUB from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Donations will go towards the UN World Food Program.

Looking ahead to the coming weeks, ASUI introduced a bill to establish the candidates that will be on the spring 2022 elections ballot.

Two separate tickets will be running for ASUI’s President and Vice President positions:

  • Katelyn Hettinga and Olivia Niemi
  • Tanner McClain and Madison Fitzgerald

There will be six senators running for six election seats:

  • Blake Schoo
  • Bre Torres
  • Daniela Aguilar
  • Hector Guerrero
  • Jared Sherman
  • Katelyn Rode

The elections will begin on April 11 and end at 5 p.m. on April 13. Links for voting will be sent to UI students’ Vandal mail accounts once voting begins on April 11.
