Last spring, Katie Hettinga and I set out on a journey to create brighter days for Vandals in our race for ASUI President and Vice President. At that time, we were two semesters into coronavirus, living and learning day by day. Vaccines were widely available, and it seemed the worst of the caseloads had passed. Now, as we enter 2022 and our fifth semester muddled by the nuances of living with the coronavirus, brighter days may seem even farther away than we had hoped.

It is easy for us, as college students, to say that this global pandemic could not have come at a worse time. Our 20s, our college years, forever tainted with disease, sadness, and isolation for so many. In a time where self-discovery and enlightenment are supposed to fill our headspace, our ideals and values have been challenged immensely. Determining what is fact or fiction in the headlines, making health decisions that we may not feel qualified to make, or facing the reality of loved ones falling ill… It has been a tough journey, no doubt.

Throughout last semester we had many conversations about coronavirus and how it affects our student lives. We hoped the Delta variant would be the end. Now, the Omicron variant threatens us again. While we’ve been beaten down time after time by this virus, we will continue to work towards brighter days.

Even with the challenges our university and community has faced, I remain hopeful. 2022 will bring its own trials and tribulations, but Katie and I are more ready than ever to advocate for students’ well-being. There are people on this campus who care deeply about you, and you are not alone in the feelings that this pandemic has caused us all to experience. As Vandals, we will make it through this exceptionally challenging time because of our resilience, determination, mental fortitude and our commitment to each other, our community and building a better future for ourselves and those we care about.

If you or a friend need some help, here are some resources available to all Vandals. COVID-19 testing is available both on and off campus. Vault tests are available for pickup around campus and Gritman Medical Center offers tests with a doctor’s referral. Support for coursework and learning is available through our incredible Academic Support Programs. The Counseling and Testing Center is available for mental health support. They are offering in person and virtual sessions to help make students feel comfortable. You may call the 24 hour emergency crisis line at 208-885-6716. Emergency crisis intervention appointments can be made through the same number. If you aren’t sure where to go for help, file a VandalCare Report online. You can file a VandalCare report for COVID-19 support, academic support, mental health concerns – or really any concern you may have.

Your ASUI representatives are always here for you. If you want to talk to a student or share a concern that we should focus on, please come see us in the ASUI office in ISUB 301 or fill out our online survey located on our website and social media accounts.

It’s okay not to be okay during this insane time in our lives. You do not have to go through anything alone on this campus. Reach out, play an active role in ending this pandemic, and know that you are valued.

Sincerely, your ASUI President.
