ASUI passes resolution calling for the implementation of a Chicanx and Latinx major.
The major, if it were to be adopted at the University of Idaho, would be the first of its kind in the state of Idaho. The resolution, which was written by Director of Diversity and Inclusion Natalie Suaste, ASUI President Kallyn Mai and ASUI Vice President Katie Hettinga, came with an acute understanding of the role that the Latinx community plays.
The resolution specifically highlighted that the Latinx population remains the fastest-growing demographic in the state, a reality that the resolution said would undoubtedly be felt on the Moscow campus. According to the resolution, this growth comes with a need to reflect this state-wide reality within the university’s course offerings.
Suaste said that the major is 20 years in the making and is intended to educate students, faculty and staff about the historical experiences of persons of Mexican descent within American society in a way that is distinct from how it is traditionally taught in university classrooms.
“Often when the history of Latinx and Chicanx is taught (on) campus, it is often done in a negative way,” Suaste said. “This major will allow students to be exposed to the history in a positive way.”
Beyond offering students a view of history that is often neglected, supporters of the resolution also cited the wider effects that it would have in terms of creating a more inclusive campus environment.
“This will increase retention and recruitment efforts for multicultural students and allow students to learn more about their culture,” Sen. Secilia Lopez said. “And for those who do not identify in those groups (it allows them) to learn more about the highest-growing diverse population in the state of Idaho.”
The major has a target implementation date of Fall 2023.
