Here’s what to expect from UI’s Career Fair

Take advantage of career-building opportunities this week

The Career Center has many valuable resources for students, including a week full of phenomenal opportunities, all culminating with the Career Fair on Wed. Oct. 6. The Career Fair on Wednesday will take place in the Kibbie Dome from 2:00 – 6:00 p.m.

Over 130 employers are expected to attend with the goal of meeting and potentially hiring students. Recruiters for full and part-time positions, internships, seasonal jobs, and grad school opportunities will be available for students to meet and have conversations with – some even hosting on the spot interviews with students.

Besides the opportunity for potential employment, there are other benefits for students who attend the fair and other preparatory events. Jen Smith, the Associate Director for Career Development, mentioned that it’s important to get your name out there.

“You never know who you might talk to, this is a great opportunity to reach out to employers and make connections,” she said.

She explained that being able to confidently talk with employers and make good impressions is a learned skill, and that the fair is a perfect opportunity to practice and improve. Students can practice their ‘elevator pitch’ and become more proficient in introducing themselves and interviewing. She also mentioned that many employers will have free swag to give to those in attendance.

This event has potential to be extremely beneficial for students who attend, especially for those who prepare before the actual event. One of the most beneficial ways to do so is through the Career Fair Prep Drop–Ins on Oct. 4 and 5.

The drop-in events are from 8am-5pm both days, and are hosted by the Vandal Success Center on the third floor of the ISUB. Students can stop by to discuss and edit their resumes while also getting help with brainstorming valuable questions and what to say to the recruiters at the event.

In addition to attending the Drop-Ins, students should prepare by researching the employers who are going to be at the event and by editing their resume. Students are also recommended to dress professionally and bring 10-15 printed copies of their resume.

In addition to the actual fair and drop-in sessions, there will be several informational sessions organized by individual employers that students can attend. On Oct. 4 there is an info session with Smithfield Hog Production, while on Oct. 6 Chief Architect, Interfor, and Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard will be present.

Overall, there is an abundance of opportunities available for UI students this upcoming week, from drop-ins with valuable advice, in-depth information sessions, and the actual career fair with many potential employers.

Students looking to further their careers or learn more about their field should make sure and take advantage of all the events and programs.
