With an extra day added to the weekend, Labor Day is a great opportunity to stretch your legs and get active. Here are some ideas for spending this three day weekend.

Grandfather and Grandmother Trails

In Clarkia, Idaho, one hour out of Moscow, are the Grandfather and Grandmother Mountains. The hike is 8.3 miles and works for a day trip. It winds up to the top of both mountains, Grandfather being the peak.

The path is dotted with wild flowers and begins among the trees. As hikers progress, the trail rises out of the woods and meadow to the steeper, rocky climb to the summit.

Reaching the peak rewards hikers with a breathtaking view of the green trees and distant blue hills.

The hike is of moderate difficulty, about three hours in length, great for a trip out of town.

Local Disc Golf

A sport that has grown in popularity over quarantine, with social distancing made easy, disc golfing is a fun activity that can be played at any skill level.

Disc golf is similar to regular golf, but has a wider appeal to a more general audience. Throwing a disc instead of using a club and ball, the sport is open to both novices and competitive players.

University of Idaho has its own course with nine baskets located by the Kibbie Dome parking lot. It’s a convenient spot on the campus’ grassy hills.

As an alternative to get out of town, Troy, Idaho’s new disc golf course features nine baskets as well. Nestled in a wooded area, the trees and hilly terrain present a new challenge to the game while allowing players to take in the outdoors.

Explore the Arboretum

Nearby as well, the Arboretum can be great for jogging, walking or wandering.

The path loops around to make a 1.4 mile trail, allowing you to take in all the different types of plants and animals. Now’s the time to visit the Arboretum before the green leaves turn to orange.

A beautiful location and for relaxing activities. With a book to read, a camera to take snapshots or a picnic blanket to sit on, the Arboretum has many possibilities.

Rentals

The UI Student Recreation Center’s Outdoor Program offers a variety of equipment to loan out to students interested.

The program can rent out equipment for kayaking, climbing, camping and more. The variety of what they offer can be seen in the Rental Center’s virtual tour.  Whatever you hope to do for the break, the center can help out.

Students receive discounts on equipment, something worth taking advantage of before graduation. Though, non-students can rent out as well. Equipment can be reserved during business hours with full payment.
