Two UI natural science students win Goldwater Scholarships

This marks the third year for UI students to receive the ‘prestigious’ awards

News Update

Two University of Idaho students have won “prestigious” scholarships from the Barry Goldwater Research Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation, according to a press release from UI.

The foundation, which was established by Congress to memorialize the work of Senator Barry Goldwater, picks from a pool of over 5,000 college sophomores and juniors that have been nominated by 438 academic institutions across the U.S., according to the scholarship’s website.

Nicholas Pancheri, who is studying biological engineering, and Peik Lund-Anderson, who is studying molecular biology and biotechnology, will receive scholarships covering tuition, fees, books room and board for a maximum of $7,500 per year, according to the press release.
Two other UI students received Goldwater Scholarships last year, the press release stated.

Last year’s UI winners were Beth Hoots, a dual major in ecology and conservation biology and Spanish, and Isabell Strawn, a biological engineering major, who are now seniors.

In 2019, Samuel Myers of the department of math and physics, was selected for the scholarship.

The scholarships are directed towards students seeking research careers in natural sciences with a purpose to “ensure the U.S. is producing the number of highly-qualified professionals the Nation needs in these critical fields,” the foundation’s website states.

Online application for next year’s scholarships will open in September, and winners will be announced next March.

Beth Hoots is a member of The Argonaut staff, but was not involved in the reporting of this story.
