Candidates discuss inclusivity and student involvement

ASUI hosts forum for potential legislative members

News Update

Associated Students University of Idaho hosted an open forum for senate candidates, covering topics from student involvement to communications with the Idaho Legislature.

A focal point of the discussion was potential senators’ goals to increase participation in the student body.

Lillie Manyon, a freshman, wants to utilize a point system to incentivize involvement with rewards.

Current Sen. Will Jansen Van Beek, a junior at the university, is running for reelection. He wants to provide outdoor study equipment at the residence halls for students to have an interactive environment.

Candidates were posed with a question from social media about how they would respond to legislation in the state that affects students negatively. Herman Roberts, a first-year student, said his goal is to encompass every student’s perspective.

Another question from social media asked how each candidate’s own life experience influenced their outlook on inclusion.

Nallely Gonzales, a junior, wants to elevate platforms providing insight for people such as National Farmworker Awareness Week and different cultural months. She said her experience with social activism has helped her learn how to bring awareness to campus.
