“A Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes”

In 2008, author Suzanne Collins released the hunger games trilogy and started an unintentional phase for adolescence across the country. A part of childhood, the series defined a generation of people and started a love for reading. This book was released just under a year ago is a new addition to the series and takes place before the utopia crumbled. 

“The Diviners”

Mystery, historical, paranormal   

Set in eccentric New York City in the 1920s, the dazzling story of a young woman’s experience of the city firsthand. Holding a supernatural gift that gives her premonitions, the girl uses her divination to catch a serial killer with dark intentions. The book is hard to put down and describes the setting with intricate detail. It is a witty read mystery that will stun every reader with plot twists. 

“The Vanishing Half”

Family, coming-of-age, mystery  

“The Vanishing Half,” a book recommended by Barack Obama according to Amazon, is a timeless piece and a must-read. When twins a part of the southern black community run away as teenagers, they are separated and don’t see each other for years. Until one sees the other passing by in the same city where they grew up, she questions her identity and family history. The book brings up themes of race, identity and community in the 20th century. 

“Ready Player Two”

Science fiction, action, video games  

A sequel to “Ready Player One,” this book takes the main character, Wade Watts, on a new quest through virtual reality OASIS. Looking for the last Easter egg to win an ultimate prize, he puts his life and the future of OASIS at stake once again. Get ready for another thrill-seeking adventure in the science fiction universe that will leave you on your toes. 

“Where the Crawdads Sing

Coming-of-age, heartbreak, mystery   

A girl sworn to the marshes is suspected of murder after a young man is found dead. The girl, independent and smart has been surviving on her own for years until two men fall in love with her. When she decides to leave the marshes to start a new life, events she would have never thought could happen, transpire.
