University of Idaho President C. Scott Green announced Torrey Lawrence’s selection as the university’s new provost and executive vice president in an email Friday afternoon.

The decision was made after reviewing over 70 applications in a national search an the “careful consideration of the five highly qualified finalists.”

Lawrence has served as an interim in the position since April, when previous provost John Wiencek accepted a position at The University of Akron. Lawrence’s appointment as full provost is effective immediately.

“His leadership during the pandemic, improvements to faculty process and commitment to our students show he is the right person to lead the academic side of our Vandal house,” Green said in the email.

Lawrence has been a Vandal for over 22 years, starting at UI as a faculty member in the Lionel Hampton School of Music. He has served as the director of Athletic Bands, associate director of LHSOM, an associate dean in the College of Letters, Arts and Social Sciences and as vice provost for faculty.

Feedback across campus following the finalist interviews showed great support for Lawrence.

His new position means he will continue to lead UI’s academic mission through a variety of methods, including faculty matters, budget management, academic programs, student success and strategic planning.
