Cancellation of Spring Break 2021 on the table for Faculty Senate

Bite-sized news from Sept. 29 Faculty Senate meeting

Spring Break Schedule Changes

The University COVID-19 Committee is currently revising a list of calendar options for next semester, some of which would entirely remove spring break, according to meeting attachments. After options are finalized, faculty, staff and students will be surveyed, Torrey Lawrence, the interim provost and executive vice president, said. The non-final list of options can be found on the Faculty Senate website under the agenda for meeting seven.

Election Day Holiday will not be pursued

ASUI’s proposed plan to make Election Day a university holiday will be not be pursued, as it interferes with the minimum required days of instruction at the university, Lawrence said.

“To make that a holiday, that means adding a day at either Thanksgiving… or at the end of the Semester,” which both pose significant challenges, Lawrence said.

Increased COVID-19 Testing

Lawrence said around 1,200 COVID-19 tests will be performed this week in response to the rise in infection rates on campus. As the testing rate increases, Lawrence asked all faculty, staff and students to participate if invited to participate in surveillance testing.

“This surveillance testing will not be as effective if we don’t have good participation,” Lawrence said.

Flu Shots for Students

There will be a flu shot clinic on campus this year, Lawrence said, but the dates and locations have yet to be decided. Flu shots will be available to students whether they are on a health plan or not, Lawrence said.
