“Eurovision Song Contest:” a musical comedy flop

“Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga” is the worst movie I have seen in a a while

When my dad told me Will Ferrell had worked on a new movie, I knew I needed to watch it. After all, he stars in some of my favorite films: “Elf” and “Blades of Glory.” From the synopsis of “Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga,” the Netflix original seemed like a mixture between “Glee” and “Pitch Perfect,” so I assumed it would be just as good.

I was sadly mistaken.

Two small town singers from Iceland, Lars (Will Ferrell) and Sigrit (Rachel McAdams) decide they want to win the Eurovision Song Contest, but they aren’t good musicians. However, the group picking artists randomly selects Lars and Sigrit because the group assumed Katiana (Demi Lovato) would win the contest.

The plot is a complete fluke.

The team who worked on the film tried to make it a comedy, but it wasn’t comparable to Ferrell’s previous films. I was confused constantly and most of the time I did not laugh.

I paused roughly an hour in to see how far along I was. I considered not finishing it, but decided to continue watching since Ferrell starred in it.

But as the film continued, I kept asking myself, ‘when will this get better? When will it make me laugh?’ Maybe I wasn’t in the mood for a stupid comedy, but I expected more from the story and the actors.

Not only that, but Ferrell and McAdams adopted inaccurate accents throughout the movie. It felt like they were portraying an Icelandic stereotype instead of Icelandic people themselves.

The negatives outweighed the positives for me.

The music in the film was enjoyable, but that seemed to be the only redeeming quality. I would have to give this movie a two out of five stars. The humor flopped and the story was stupid, but it was still somewhat entertaining. If given the chance to choose between watching this movie for the first time or not, I probably would have watched it for the actors. But I do not ever want to watch the film again. It was a waste of time.
