April is Get Yourself Tested (GYT) month. GYT is a time to encourage young people to discuss sexually transmitted infections (STIs), get tested and treated for STIs to protect the health of individuals and their partners.

Personal and community health are topics that impact the world. With response to COVID-19, there are serious concerns to stop the spread of the illness. Along with questions regarding overall health and well-being during this time, sexual health is important also consider.

How can we practice safer sex during a time of social distancing?

Currently, little is known about the transmission of this virus through semen and vaginal fluids. If you do choose to participate in sexual activity, it is best to remember to use a barrier, such as an external condom. External condoms can prevent the spread of other STIs, unintended pregnancy and other risks.

The Vandal Food Pantry will be offering free safer sex supplies during this time. Schedules can be checked out at www.uidaho.edu/vandalfoodpantry.

People may be asymptomatic but have COVID-19, meaning they are carriers of the virus but have no symptoms similar to STIs. Social distancing can be an efficient way to reduce the spread of COVID-19, as well as other STIs. Skip sexual behavior if you or your partner are feeling unwell, this will ensure the reduction of spread during the pandemic.

In addition to abstaining from sexual behavior and practicing social distancing, here are a few recommendations from various public health agencies across the country.

  • You are your safest sexual partner! Practicing self-pleasure is an alternative to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
  • Communication with your partner(s) is a great alternative while practicing social distancing.
  • Avoid sexual behaviors with anyone outside of your current household. If you do choose to, consider limiting the number of partners.
  • Talk with your partner(s) about a plan for how you can limit the risk of spreading COVID-19.
  • If you or your partner(s) are feeling unwell, refrain from engaging in sexual behaviors.
  • Be sure to wash your hands before and after, for a minimum of 20 seconds with hot and soapy water. If you choose to use sex toys and accessories, be sure to wash these before and after as well.
