UI names new interim provost

Vice Provost of Faculty Torrey Lawrence to begin work in new role on May 3

News Update

Torrey Lawrence has been named the new University of Idaho interim provost and executive vice president, according to a university-wide email from President C. Scott Green.

Lawrence has been a UI employee for over 20 years and currently serves as vice provost for faculty. He will take over for current Provost and Executive Vice President, John Wiencek, who will begin a new job as Provost and Executive Vice President at the University of Akron on May 29.

UI administration has begun a national search to select a permanent Provost and Executive Vice President, according to Green’s email.

Lawrence began his time as a Vandal community member in 1998 as faculty of the Lionel Hampton School of Music. Before accepting his role as vice provost, he was the associate dean for undergraduate studies and faculty affairs in the College of Letters, Arts and Social Sciences. He served as director of UI athletic bands from 1998 to 2012 and director of the School of Music from 2013 to 2017.

Lawrence will begin his work in his new position on May 3, according to Green’s email.

“His leadership is appreciated and the stability he will bring in these uncertain times is very much needed,” Green said in the email.
