The new facility is one of only a few in the West capable of conducting research on genetics, nutrition, selective breeding, physiology, fish health and endangered species on both freshwater and marine fish species.

The open house will take place from 4 to 6 p.m. May 30 at 2000 W. Sixth St.

Light snacks and beverages will be provided.

Mental health walk to end stigma

The Disability Action Center Northwest, in partnership with the 1912 Center, Wellness Recovery Action Plan Group and the Latah Recovery Center, is hosting a mental health awareness walk to end stigma surrounding mental health.

“May is Mental Health Awareness Month and we wanted to start the conversation,” said Sharlisa Davis, certified facilitator of the WRAP Group. “Mental Illness is a disease, not a decision. And we hope to end the stigma.”

All are invited to join in the family friendly event from 4 to 5 p.m. May 29. The walk will begin at the Latah Recovery Community Center and proceed to the 1912 Center to hear speakers. Snacks and water will be provided, and participants are asked to wear something lime green.

McConnell Mansion temporarily closed to public

The McConnell Mansion community museum will be closed to the public from May 21 to June 14 for historic roof structures to be replaced.

McConnell Mansion was built in 1886 by former Idaho Governor William J. McConnell. Different rooms of the house represent different time periods, and the mansion is available for events.  The project is being completed by Renegade Northwest Inc. out of Post Falls and managed by Associated Architects of Moscow.

----“Mental Illness is a disease, not a decision. And we hope to end the stigma.” Mental illness is a category, it is not "a" disease. If you carry the stigma of mental illnesses in our mind, it will go with you everywhere.

Mental health walk to end stigma?? Anyone walking with "the stigma" of mental health in their mind will carry it with themselves from the beginning of the march to its end and beyond. It is that pernicious a prejudice. Harold A Maio
