New senators fill ASUI seats

Senate finalizes business and swears in new senate

A resolution passed unanimously at the last ASUI Senate meeting of the year recognizing University President Chuck Staben for his contributions to the university.

ASUI President Nicole Skinner will read the resolution at Staben’s tree planting ceremony this Friday.

The Senate moved to immediately consider all new business, including a bill approving the financing and budgeting of the Department of Student Involvement for the 2019-20 fiscal year. A bill also passed appoint the 2019-20 ASUI Executive Branch.

A bill was also passed allocating $805 for university-wide free menstrual products. The funds will go toward assisting Facilities with costs of updating current menstrual product dispensers to allow them to dispense the products without coins. Facilities said the total cost will be around $2,500.

Resolutions passed acknowledging Skinner, Vice President Carlos Vazques as well senators Jacey Bacon, Jonah Baker, Kristin Nesbitt, Colby West, Sam Harrich, Hannah Spear, Sierra Rothermich and Jacob Lockhart for their accomplishments and dedication to ASUI.

Director of Student Involvement Shawn O’Neal said he has not seen an ASUI President as dedicated as Skinner during his time on campus. O’Neal said the progress that has been made this year can only continue if the incoming senate continues the work.

Skinner talked about highlights of the year — including creating the first Idaho Higher Education Legislative Report card, changing the hours the library is open during dead week and finals week and raising $3,000 for Sacred Heart Children’s Hospital.

At the close of the meeting, Skinner swore in Lockhart as 2019-20 ASUI President before Lockhart swore in Faustine Moulton as ASUI Vice President, then swearing in the fall 2019 Senate.

Current Sen. Riley Ragain was elected as pro-tempore for the upcoming semester.

Moulton conducted a meeting with the new Senate. The majority of the meeting focused on advice from outgoing ASUI senators.

“Never take your duties and try not to take yourself too seriously,” O’Neal said, “but never take your duties lightly.”
