LED golf balls?

UI Golf Course hosts second glow in the dark event

All ages and abilities are invited to the second Glow in the Dark Night Golf event 7:30 p.m. May 1 at the University of Idaho Golf Course.

Michael Wagner, golf coach and instructor, urges anyone interested to call ahead and make a tee time to avoid a rush at 7:30 p.m. He said the routing encompasses four holes — 10, 14, 15 and nine — for a short, walkable course.

“It was a good event a few years in ago in August 2017, and is going to be a better event now,” Wagner said. “With the clientele that we have, including students and those who just want to get out for the fun of it, we thought this event would probably work from the start.”

The beauty of the event is that it takes an hour or less, which is convenient for a weekday. There were more community members than students last year, but he anticipates increased participation all around this year.

The event is great for everyone, and made for those who just want to test out the waters and not worry about keeping score, he said.

All of the walking paths, fairways, penalty areas, bunkers, flags and balls will be different glow in the dark colors. He said the LED golf balls stay lit for up to eight minutes at a time.

“Once everything is lined and it starts to get darker, it looks really cool,” Wagner said. “My favorite part is just watching the balls fly through the dark.”

Individuals are allowed to use their own carts since none will be rented out, but golf club rentals will be available. Irons are encouraged to use because drivers have the potential to crack from the material of the LED golf balls, he said.

“It is a nice, fun, social atmosphere,” Wagner said. “If you want to come out here with six to seven people and all hit glow balls, that’s great.”
