A look into Mom’s weekend and its events

The eight-hour drive from Idaho Falls to Moscow might stop many parents from attending Mom’s Weekend, but according to the mother of a University of Idaho student, Honore Storms, it has done nothing to stop her from attending the event.

Honore Storms is a former UI student and said she wouldn’t miss Mom’s weekend for the world.

“This will be my eighth Mom’s Weekend,” Storms said, referring to the event on Friday, April 5 through Sunday. “I wouldn’t have missed one. There’s no easy way to get to Moscow from Idaho Falls, but I have looked forward to the beautiful drive on I-90 and the fun activities… we’ve tried to take advantage of opportunities to share in what our girls were doing.”

Storms said she encourages all parents to go to the event.

Storms said some of her favorite memories are getting to see her daughter’s friends and getting to see a “glimpse” into their lives.

“This is a special time in her life,” Storms said. “Life will never be the same after college, so sharing a glimpse of her life is great.”

Mia Goodwin, Student Alumni Program Coordinator, helped to organize Mom’s Weekend and said her favorite part of organizing the event is creating a “meaningful experience” for students.

Goodwin said that most of the events will cost money, but there will be a few events that are free.

Goodwin said to get a full list of what events will be happening during Mom’s Weekend and to see the cost of the events, students should check out the Mom’s Weekend webpage on the UI website.

Although the weekend is called Mom’s Weekend, Goodwin said that all students and community members are welcome to attend the event, even if they don’t have parents.

Goodwin said that it was for that reason this year will be the last Mom’s Weekend.

Goodwin said that although the dates and events will remain the same next year, the name will be changing to Parents and Family Weekend to be more inclusive to non-traditional families.

“It’s just going to be a name change. Most of our signature events are going to remain the same, but we do hope to include just more inclusive events overall,” Goodwin said.

Goodwin said that even though the name is changing, the meaning of the event will remain the same.

“With Mom’s weekend, Dad’s weekend, Parent and Family Weekend — it’s really just your weekend with your family,” Goodwin said. “That’s kind of our overall goal.”
