The Vandal Nation staff makes their picks for the Vandal Nation Athlete of the Week

Meredith Spelbring — Zachary Short, track and field

Idaho track and field just wrapped up the 2019 indoor season at the Big Sky Indoor Track and Field Championships and no one stood out more than thrower Zachary Short, who not only won the event, but broke his own conference record yet again and earned a spot in the NCAA competition, the only Idaho athlete to do so.

Brandon Hill — Collin Sather, football
The impact of losing Collin was felt far and wide across the Vandal family this week. His community —both in Moscow and Spokane —doing its best to help his family during this difficult time shows exactly what the Silver and Gold are capable of.

Chris Deremer — Taylor Pierce, women’s basketball

While most of the spotlight has been on Ferenz lately, and deservingly so, Pierce brings a ferocity to this team that helps put them over the edge. If Pierce is on fire, the rest of the team follows and her performance against Southern Utah was no different.

Jonah Baker — Mikayla Ferenz, women’s basketball

She only needs 13 points for the all-time conference record to allow Idaho to keep pace in the race at the top of the Big Sky. This whole season has been a fireworks show for Ferenz, but this week will be the true crowning achievement.

Zack Kellogg — Zachary Nunis, track and field

This Freshman jumper out of Australia continues to impress in his first season, setting another personal best in the triple jump, hitting 15.14 meters in Bozeman on Saturday. Nunis made it to the podium twice with his showing, both with second place finishes.

Braedon Cain — Jared Rodriguez, men’s basketball

He had double-doubles in both games last week with a huge 28-point and 11 rebound game against Southern Utah.

Jordan Smith — Collin Sather, football.

While it’s not quite football season, Collin deserves this award for his incredible work ethic and perseverance. He was, and remains, a driving force of motivation for this football team, and was an impactful player on and off the field that united the Vandal Family. In my book, that embodies what Vandal Athletics is all about.
