A test of knowledge

UI Student Involvement, Intramural Sports to host 13th annual College Bowl Trivia Tournament

The University of Idaho Department of Student Involvement (DSI) will host the 13th annual College Trivia Bowl Feb. 28, partnering with Intramural Sports.

Starting in 2006, the event brings together teams of four, testing their knowledge on various trivia topics. They compete for Intramural Sports points. It is open to students, faculty and staff.

Check-in starts at 5 p.m. in the DSI Office, with tournament play beginning an hour later and lasting until 9:30 p.m. The winning four teams will then compete against one another March 1, with all members of the final three receiving a gift certificate to the Vandal Store. Teams may have an alternate.

“It’s a way to get those are who particularly active to get out and do something to actively participate in events,” said Butch Fealy, associate director of Campus Recreation.

The event has had anywhere from 13 to 21 teams participating in the tournament, with around 80 to 100 people actively signed up. Spectators are welcome to attend any of the events.

“(It is) a great opportunity to get out there with a group of friends for a friendly competition and meet new people that they might not have met before,” Fealy said.

Questions for the College Bowl are decided at random and vary across a wide variety of topics, from pop-culture to Chinese history.

“We really try to have a wide spread and make it different every year,” he said.

Trivia begins with a toss-up question, and the team who answers correctly, gets a 10-point bonus.

Applications for the tournament are due by 5 p.m. Feb. 26. They can be turned into Idaho Commons Room 302 or the Campus Rec Center — the latter’s cutouff is 11 a.m. There is no limit on how many teams can apply to participate in the event, but only 32 will be accepted.
