Dash After Dark

Guest Voice — Dasyre Sires, Vandal Health Education

Spring classes are on their way to a close and the Dash After Dark 5k/2k begins at 9:00 pm in the Student Rec Center April 25. This fun run is put on to aid us in our celebration of the upcoming summer and provide us all with a little mental boost to push through the last several weeks of the semester. This event is open to anyone over 18 and participants have the option of a 5k (3.1 mile route) or a 2k (1.3 mile route) both starting and ending at the rec center.

This event is completely free for students and only $5 for non-students. It will be packed with fun with glowsticks at the start, snacks at the finish line, and even an opportunity to get creative and goofy with a glow stick and denim crafts beforehand from 3-5 pm the day of the race. This will all take place in the Well Space right inside the Student Rec Center. There are whispers of tutorials for glow stick tutus, glasses, and even some denim armbands, headbands, and bracelets that can be decorated in support of Denim Day and Sexual Assault Awareness Month.

That’s right, Denim Day falls on April 25th as well! In case you are wondering what Denim Day is, it is a campaign developed by Peace Over Violence to combat and protest against destructive attitudes towards sexual assault. Almost two decades ago there was a case that was overturned allowing a rapist to go free due to the victim’s tight jeans and the consensus that there must of been consent as the victim was presumed to have helped the attacker remove them. Please join us April 25th in protesting against these attitudes and standing against sexual assault.

Let us all dawn our denim and our glow sticks and spend the day advocating for sexual assault awareness and celebrating mental wellness as well as the conclusion of this spring semester with the Dash After Dark 5k/2k!
