Women’s Soccer: Spring soccer vs. the Sounders

Idaho women’s soccer continued with their spring schedule, losing to the Spokane Sounders boys’ club 3-2, but gained some useful experience.

“They are quick, driving the ball, they challenged us in different ways…. they were very dynamic at times, knew how to draw us into space and open up other opportunities,” Idaho Head Coach Derek Pittman said.

The Sounders gave the Vandals an unfamiliar challenge. The team was small in stature and very quick with the ball, Idaho had to adjust and refine its game.

Idaho had two goals score during the match, one by junior forward Myah Merino and the other by the newly acquired junior Juliana Detar.

Pittman said he was very pleased with how Idaho played all around on Friday.

“This was a tremendous learning experience for us defensively,” Pittman said. “We changed our shape up a little bit and I thought it was tremendous for us on the attack. I thought we played some of the most attractive soccer since we have been here and we just need to continue doing this in games. That it was you do in spring, develop, and overall, I thought it was a great night for our team.”

There was a bit of a scare in the first half, with senior goalkeeper Makayla Presgrave taking a knee to the face while defending a play against a Sounder forward, resulting in a few stiches. “Hopefully nothing more than a minor knock that she’ll recover from quickly,” Pittman said on Presgrave. “But that is what we ask of Makayla, she has got to be brave and courageous and she did that. Be brave and make that save.”

Idaho will play their next match against Boise State 11:30 a.m. Sunday April 15th  in the Kibbie Dome.
