Tennis: Finishing first in Grand Forks

Idaho men vs North Dakota

The University of Idaho men’s tennis team scored their first win of the spring season Friday, taking down conference rival North Dakota 6-1 in Grand Forks, North Dakota.

Idaho (1-3) opened with a 1-0 advantage after taking the doubles point. Sophomore Guilherme Scarpelli and junior Lucas Contino took second while senior Felipe Fonseca and sophomore Esteban Santibanez took third, sealing the point for Idaho.

The Vandals fell only once in the singles category, winning all matches but one. Idaho took all four of the top courts. Senior Mark Kovacs took first place over North Dakota’s Lukas Buth, 7-6(2), 6-1.

Junior Carlos Longhi Neto took second 6-3,6-4 over north Dakota’s  Daniel Martinez. Scarpelli and Fonseca took third and fourth, respectively. Santibanez took a 6-1,6-0 win to earn him sixth.

Idaho women vs North Dakota

The University of Idaho woman’s tennis team started out the Big Sky season right with a 6-1 win in Grand Forks, North Dakota Friday.

Junior Marianna Petrei went into the day and soared all the way up to No. 1 by the end. Petrei went 6-3,6-0 over North Dakota’s Carmen Palumbo. Junior Maria Tacares took the No. 2 court. After dropping the first the match went into three sets (3-6,6-1,6-3).

Senior Lucia Badillos took the win over North Dakota’s Preethi Kasillingam at No.3 6-1,6-2

For the doubles event, freshman Laura Spataro and junior Maria Taveres finished up at No. 2 while sophomore Maggie Chen and sophomore Shion Watabe took the point for the Vandals on the No. 3 court, 6-4

Spataro found her first win of the season in the singles event at No. 4 winning 7-5, 6-4, while Watabe rounded out the day at No. 6 with a 6-1, 6-2 win.
