Above the call of duty — Staff Council recognizes Nichole Vietz as the March staff member of the month

Nichole Vietz’s willingness to help knows no boundaries.

Vietz currently resides in Colfax and is an undeclared student at the University of Idaho. She is also a fiscal management assistant in the Office of the President.

“I sort of went the untraditional route,” Vietz said. “I am undeclared on my major, I feel like my career will be more in the human resources, fiscal management or business management departments.”

Vietz said she has worked with numbers for 17 years, but her experience has always been more practical than academically professional.

“I’ve worked at Group Health Cooperative for 12 years dealing with numbers, and I initially began my work here in October of 2011,” Vietz said.

Vietz said her job is to keep the financial status of the president’s office balanced, and to facilitate moving funds when necessary.

“I pay the bills and I handle a lot of the personnel aspects in the president’s office,” Vietz said. “Whenever the office hires somebody, I get the paperwork going. I also have overview of the budget, as well as giving quarterly reports to the president about his budget. I help in the transfer of money whenever the president supports other units or colleges in specific endeavors.”

Vietz was nominated for the staff of the month by Lysa Salsbury, director of the Women’s Center. She said she nominated Vietz because of her excellent work at the Women’s Center during a stressful time last summer.

“Our office manager took a different position on campus right at the beginning of the school year,” Salsbury said. “It took us until December to hire a new person for that position. During that interim period, Nichole was just an amazing source of support for helping with financial transactions processed and providing guidance on different processes that are usually taken care of by our floor manager.”

Vietz said although she’s only witnessed a small amount of what the Women’s Center does, she is grateful to have gained the experience she received there.

“My work has been pretty limited, but I really enjoy helping to solve a problem, and I love helping people,” Vietz said.
