Mix tape: Songs for a new season

With websites like Spotify, Pandora and 8tracks, it”s not difficult to discover new music. However, even with apps that provide such an extensive variety, it”s easy to fall in love with one or two of the music sharing websites” pre-made playlists and not listen to anything else. For those who find themselves in a music rut lately, here are some songs that may often go over-looked, but are definitely worth the listen.

“Tonight” – Tyler Joseph

This song is a special kind of wonderful. It comes from Twenty One Pilots vocalist Tyler Joseph”s independent EP, “No Phun Intended,” and while every song in the collection is worth the listen, Joseph”s vocals paired with piano create a beautiful and haunting piece.

“Exile Vilify” – The National

This indie rock band”s vocalist, Matt Berninger, has a voice that can remedy any bad day and while his vocals in this song are great on their own, they sound even better when paired with the subtle sound of rain. Google “Exile Vilify, Chell in the Rain” and the result will be one of the most soothing songs you”ve ever heard.

“Woke the F*ck Up” – Jon Bellion

Everyone should be listening to every Jon Bellion song ever. This artist has an incredible collection of songs that dip into almost every genre. “Woke the F*uck Up,” in particular, is the perfect balance of hip-hop and electric. From love to life in a big city to dropping out of college, Bellion”s songs are about real life, and his lyrics are so heartfelt that they are relatable on every level.

“Sea of Air” – Portugal. The Man

This rock band out of Alaska may not be churning out ready-for-radio Top 40 hits, but its music is absolutely worth the listen. One of their softer songs, “Sea of Air” combines gentle acoustics and wistful vocals that make for a calm, but catchy, study tune.

“Brooklyn” – Wakey! Wakey!

Similar to Adele”s recent hit single, “Hello,” this is the kind of song that once heard for the first time, will be played on repeat over and over again. In “Brooklyn,” this alternative pop band also incorporates piano behind gentle, lilting vocals to create a soft melody and a soulful song that pulls at the heart strings and makes for a great listen.

“San Francisco Street” – Sun Rai

Solo artist Rai Thistlethwayte, who performs under the name “Sun Rai,” brings his signature sulty vocals to this soulful, jazzy song. It”s perfect for almost every occassion – from studying to traveling to hanging out on a rainy day, it”s just a good idea.
