No. 12 Oregon 61, Georgia State 28
After getting its first win against an FBS opponent in school history last week, Georgia State (1-2, 1-0) went to take on the nationally ranked Oregon Ducks only to come away hurting after a 33-point beatdown. Nick Arbuckle still had 318 yards and three touchdowns against the Oregon defense giving the Panthers something to feel very good about. GSU still sits in first place in the Sun Belt. It has the only conference win and will host FCS-school Liberty in two weeks after a bye this week.
No. 24 Wisconsin 28, Troy 3
There really were no positives in Troy’s (1-2) loss at Wisconsin, but the loss was expected nonetheless. Brandon Silvers had 174 yards and no touchdowns with no picks. Silvers only averaged 5.1 yards per pass and had a 34.1 quarterback rating. The Trojans have a bye this week before playing host to South Alabama to begin conference play Oct. 3.
Georgia Southern 48, The Citadel 13
The Eagles of Georgia Southern continue to dominate after the West Virginia loss and look like the best team in the Sun Belt Conference once again after a 48-13 win over The Citadel. Matt Breida had 164 yards and two touchdowns while Wesley Fields and LA Ramsby had a touchdown. Kevin Ellison scampered for two more. GSU now stands at 2-1 and will be in Moscow Saturday to play Idaho in the Kibbie Dome.
Arkansas State 70, Missouri State 7
After two rough losses, one a blowout and one a near upset, Arkansas State (1-2) finally found the win column with a huge win against FCS-school Missouri State. James Tabary had 255 yards passing and three touchdowns while Johnston White rushed for three touchdowns on 87 yards. The Red Wolves take on Toledo Saturday on the road and will then host Idaho in two weeks.
Southern Miss 56, Texas State 50
The Bobcats of Texas State didn’t come out on top in the offensive shootout between them and Southern Miss, losing 56-50 despite a last-second touchdown. Tyler Jones was nearly perfect with 310 yards and three touchdowns while rushing for a whopping 160 yards and two touchdowns on the ground. The loss drops the Bobcats to 1-2 with a very tough road matchup at Houston Saturday night.
South Alabama 34, San Diego State 27, OT
In one of the biggest wins in South Alabama’s (2-1) short history, the Jaguars upset the favored San Diego State Aztecs on the road in an overtime thriller. Cody Clements had 270 yards and two touchdowns while Xavier Johnson went for a career-high 142 yards and two touchdowns. South Alabama will be tested once again next week by hosting NC State.
UTEP 50, New Mexico State 47, OT
Despite putting up impressive offensive stats, the New Mexico State (0-3, 0-1) defense was exposed again. Despite leading the majority of the game, NMSU lost to rival UTEP in overtime. Tyler Rogers had 285 yards and three touchdowns with one interception and Larry Rose III continued to impress with another huge game, this time 186 yards and a touchdown against the Miners. Teldrick Morgan also had 151 yards on just four catches. NMSU needs a win desperately after three losses and next week on the road at rival New Mexico doesn’t seem like the place for that to happen.
