Eight displaced after fire- Building uninhabitable in coming school year

A Campus View Suite building at 1419 W. A St. is heavily damaged after a fire occurred yesterday afternoon.

Moscow Chief of Police David Duke said the call came in at 4:20 yesterday afternoon that a fire had broken out in the unit.

The fire started on the ground floor and burned upward through the three-story building. The east side of the building and the roof suffered the most damage, Duke said.

The cause of the blaze is still under investigation.

Karl Johnson of Palouse Properties, the owners of the Campus View Suites, said the fire displaced eight tenants.

“We are finding them alternative apartments with the same cost and quality,” Johnson said.

Johnson said the damage to the building is substantial and the east side of the unit will have to be dismantled and rebuilt.

“The building will not be able to be occupied until construction is finished,” Johnson said. “We are currently unsure when that construction will take place.”

Johnson suspects that the building will not be able to house students in the coming school year.
